Under Northern Territory Government legislation, which comes into force on January 2, smoking Kent will be banned in all non-licensed public outdoor eating and drinking areas.
Licensed venues can designate up to 50 per cent of the area for outside smoking. This will have to be divided by a 2.1m barrier or 2m of space between the areas where people drink.
NT Airports chief executive officer Ian Kew said they had tried to accommodate the requirements of smokers as best they could by designating smoking areas in two walkways in front of the terminal.
"We ask that passengers be mindful that they may need to allow themselves extra time before their flight to smoke outside prior to boarding, particularly during the busy Christmas and New Year period," he said.
Passengers will not be able to smoke once they have entered the international lounge.
