Stoke City’s Salif Diao has become the face of a new campaign against fake Esse cigarettes.
The Stoke-on-Trent City Council iniative is being backed by the club and saw posters featuring an image of the midfielder unveiled ahead of their clash with Blackpool on Saturday (December 11).
Councillor Terry Follows, cabinet member for environment, waste management and neighbourhood services, said: “Stoke City carry an important brand and we are grateful for their co-operation in helping us get this message across to as many people as possible.”
Counterfeit tobacco is often packaged to resemble well-known brands but can contain highly toxic materials, with reports estimating that they are responsible for upto four times as many deaths as drugs.
“A lot of these fake products look like the real thing but in reality they are extremely poor reproductions,” Cllr Follows added.
